BodyGem® Measurement Conditions
Ideal: The client should come in first thing in the morning after 8-12 hours of not eating, drinking (they can drink water), and exercising and they should not smoke for 1 hour before the measurement. Acceptable: The client should come in after 4 hours of not eating, drinking (they can drink water), consuming caffeine, nutritional supplements or medication that contains ephedra or pseudoephedrine, and exercising. In addition, the client should not smoke for 1 hour before the measurement.
Measurement Protocol
1) Acceptable measurement conditions · The healthcare professional should confirm that the acceptable measurement conditions have been met. If the client has had food, drink, caffeine, nicotine, any nutritional supplement or medication containing ephedra or pseudoephedrine, or exercised in the past 4 hours, reschedule the measurement.
2) Location Perform the measurement in a quiet room that is not too cold or too warm and is away from any outside distractions (such as windows, other clients, busy room, television, etc.).
3) Client preparation · Before the client begins the measurement, make sure that he/she is comfortable, not chewing gum, has gone to the restroom, and is not fidgeting. Plug in the BodyGem® device and insert the flow tube.
4) Relaxation period · The client must relax in a seated position for 15 minutes before the measurement. This is a crucial step and must be enforced. The healthcare professional should use this time to explain the measurement process, reaffirm the importance of what this measurement will provide the client, and answer any questions.
5) Measurement · Instruct the client to breathe normally, relax, and not move during the measurement. · Place the mouthpiece into the flow tube, push the button on top of the BodyGem device to calibrate it, ask the client to put the nose clip on, and hand the device to the client after it has calibrated (the device will beep and the light will turn green). · Measurement is complete when the BodyGem device beeps and the light turns amber. · Hand a paper towel or tissue to the client to wipe off any saliva. · Write down the RMR number that is displayed on the LCD screen. Remove the nose clip and discard the mouthpiece.
Re-measurement Suggestions · Repeat RMR measurements will help you reach your goals quickly and easily. · Have your metabolism measured at the beginning of your program to establish a calorie budget that’s unique to your body. · Have your metabolism re-measured 2 to 3 weeks after starting your program when metabolism may begin to slow. This allows you to readjust your calorie budget and activity level for continued success. · Measure your metabolism every 4 weeks thereafter throughout your weight management program until you reach a weight maintenance mode. |
